on not being able to drive

Theres a freedom when you turn 16 that you get to keep forever and it’s a feeling I will not know. It’s funny how often someone will say “well you get to sit back and enjoy the ride.” How incredibly boring, and no offense but you’re kind of a shitty driver anyway. I’m sick and tired of being a passenger. I think sometimes people actually recognize the sacred space of a car. My friend had a new album he made, and he was listening to figure out track order. Where’d he go to do that? His car. There is a certain amount of freedom, but also solidarity inside a car. The car is really interesting in that it operates as this tool which can contain one person or many. You can go out on your own in solitude, watching the world go by with your aimless winding. Or inversely to that, you can cram it full of people for a shared adventure. You don’t have to look at a map of a city and plot out all the bus stops. Wherever there is road, you can go night or day. I’m sick and tired of looking at a map, seeing where someone lives, and realizing there house is about 1.5 hours away by bus including walking but 20 minutes by car. To “pop in” to see a friend costs me 3+ hours. And oh, wan’t to hang out past 11? Nope, not if you want to walk for 6 hours when the buses have stopped running. Oh, you want to take a road trip? Wow, that sounds great, we can switch off driving so you don’t get fatigued. Oh wait, no we can’t. Man, I’m pretty useless.
